Everything you need to know before participating.
Laguna San Ignacio is located within the Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve (REBIVI) in Baja California Sur, Mexico. REBIVI has been a Natural World Heritage Site since 1993, being a sanctuary for gray whales, home to sea turtles, and hosting a great biological diversity and ecosystems.
We recommend traveling during daytime. Search on Google Maps for "Ecotourtugas" or "El Cardón Mulegé Baja California Sur." If you're arriving via the Transpeninsular Highway, you'll first need to reach the town of "San Ignacio" and then take the road to Laguna San Ignacio. Once you arrive here, head to the community of "El Cardón".

The climate is dry with very little rainfall during summer and autumn. The average temperature during summer is 23-35ºC (73-95ºF), and during winter it's 12-28ºC (54-82ºF).
We recommend bringing warm clothing for mornings and evenings, and lightweight comfortable clothing for the day. You can bring a windbreaker, hat or cap, and sunglasses.
We recommend bringing field shoes and/or water shoes as the monitoring takes place on the edge of the estuary, where the ground can be muddy.
Come prepared with a field backpack. Include a handheld flashlight, water bottle, mosquito repellent, and sunscreen.
You can bring your camera, but during the monitoring, our staff will take photos of your participation and share them with you at no cost.
Communication is limited. There is no phone signal, and internet connection is fluctuating, so please take precautions.
Bringing diving equipment, energy-intensive items, and overly formal clothing.
